I would just like it if I could steal Sharon Van Etten’s melody skills so I could actually finish the songs I start. Melodyception, plz.

can’t waaaaaaaaaaaaait
Sharon Van Etten’s follow-up to 2010’s Epic — her highly anticipated first release via her new label, Jagjaguwar Records — now has a release date (February 7), title, tracklist, and epic group of indie collaborators. As it turns out, the 12-track LP, Tramp, was not only recorded with the National’s Aaron Dessner, but also features guest spots by the likes of Zach Condon, Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, Matt Barrick of the Walkmen, Doveman, and Julianna Barwick. Today’s press release notes:
The shimmering sound of Tramp both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. Throughout the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Van Etten was without a home — crashing with friends and storing her possessions between varied locations.
If you’ve been following our Van Etten praise over the past year, album cut “All I Can” might sound familiar, as she’s been road-testing the climactic, Jeff Buckley-esque heartbreaker since SXSW this spring. Check out the full tracklist below, along with an excellent video of that song performed live at Bonnaroo:

“Love More” - Justin Vernon (Sharon Van Etten Cover)
do what you said the words she said left out
over unto the sky where i’ll soon fly
and she took the time
to believe in to believe in what she said
and she made me love
she made me love
she made me love more.
Little Scream - The Heron and the Fox with Sharon van Etten, Bryce and Aaron Dessner, Richard Reed Parry at musicNOW
(I wish it picked up sound better sadface)
Matt and I went to the Bottom of the Hill to see a little show Sharon was headlining with Little Scream and Colossal Yes. We didn’t get there to see Colossal Yes, but Little Scream was totally awesome, albeit very weird. We rushed to the bathrooms after their set, and as I was waiting in the predictably long girl-y line, BRYCE FUCKING DESSNER walked right past me. Bryce Dessner, for all you unfortunate souls, is one of the twin guitarists from THE NATIONAL. I knew Aaron had been working with Sharon on her new record, so at first I thought it was him and not his brother.
Matt and I went outside and there he was, just chilling with the lead singer of Little Scream. We went up to him and totally goobed out, and he was appreciative but sort of quiet. He started talking to the singer again, so we left him alone until after Sharon played. She, by the way, was incredible. She’s flawless and totally charming. My favorite songs of the night were “Peace Signs”, “Tornado”, “For You”, and “Love More”. She didn’t play “Consolation Prize”, which bummed me out, but you can’t get everything. I stopped caring about this soon enough.
We debated whether to go up to Bryce or not, as he looked sort of tired and aloof during the show. He walked past us and started to talk to Laurel from Little Scream again, and I sucked up my shyness and decided to go over to him. I told him about my illustration of him, Aaron and Matt (Berninger, not my Matt), and that I wanted to send each of them a copy. He was completely gracious and sweet enough to tell me where to send it, and soon Matt and I were both talking to him about plans for The National, Dark was the Night, and the song they did with Sharon for Win Win. It’s so rare that you get to tell someone how much their music means to you, and seeing his face after telling him how many hundreds of times I’ve played their songs was just the biggest treat ever. He and Aaron are doing a follow-up to Dark was the Night!!!! He also signed the back of Matt’s debit card, lol.
We also got to meet Sharon, who was kind enough to give autographs, personal messages and hugs to all the fans who wanted to meet her. I told her that I wrote songs, too, and she told me to send them to her. I was totally flattered. I also found out that her awesome guitar string tattoo was done by Paco, a tattoo artist in Texas. She also signed the back of Matt’s debit card.
This is what Sharon wrote to me:

I’m still reeling from the night. So much bad stressful shit has been happening this past month to both of us, and then we get to meet and talk to BRYCE FROM THE FREAKING NATIONAL AND SHARON VAN ETTEN. AND I GET TO GIVE THEM BOTH DRAWINGS I DID OF THEM. I wrote this more for myself, just because it was one of the best nights I’ve ever had, and an experience that motivates me even more to keep doing.
